Honours and Awards

In addition to promoting the further study of numismatics and providing a forum for exchange of ideas and information, the RNSNZ also recognises and acknowledges work done in the furtherance of numismatic research and publications, along with recognising the contributions of members who volunteer to run or govern the Society.

Lampard Medal

Awarded for meritorious and outstanding service to the Society over a significant period of time. It is the Society’s premier award to recognise service going well beyond ordinary levels.

The award is named after Bill Lampard a long-serving President (21 years), Fellow of the Society and also an officer of the Wellington Coin Club. He devoted countless hours to the two societies, now merged, as he organised major events and fairs, edited Journals and Newsletters, arranged auctions and talks and kept or completed financial accounts in unstinting service.  He also warmly encouraged many others in their hobby and helped them to put their best foot forward in service to the Society and numismatics.

Sutherland Medal

Awarded for highly meritorious service to Numismatic Research and Scholarship. It is the Society’s premier award for numismatic research.

The award is named after Allan Sutherland. In 1931 Allan proposed the establishment of the Society and served as the inaugural Secretary for 15 years, before serving as President from 1946-1948. He served as Vice-President 1949-52, 1957-58 and 1966-67. Alongside this he was the Editor of the New Zealand Numismatic Reports from 193I to 1946 and the New Zealand Numismatic Journal from 1947 to 1957, he remained an Associate Editor from then until his death. He served continuously on the Council of the Society from the day it was formed until his death, a period of 36 years. He produced a number of works, but his most outstanding was the Numismatic History of New Zealand, which broke entirely new ground and recorded his painstaking research over many years.
